π© What makes an ingredient a red flag?
Red flag ingredients are those with credible safety concerns β potential carcinogens, hormone disruptors, or irritants with no benefit. The Clean Scoreβ’ system uses only published scientific data, never trends or marketing claims.
βοΈ Why is titanium dioxide a concern?
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) was banned by the EU in food in 2022 after it was found to be a potential genotoxin β meaning it may damage DNA. It has zero benefit in toothpaste and is added purely for whitening aesthetics. There's no reason to have it in your mouth twice a day.
π§Ό Why is SLS still in toothpaste?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate creates the foam you associate with "clean." But it's a known mucosal irritant β it strips the protective lining of your mouth and is strongly linked to canker sores. Manufacturers use it because it's cheap. Your mouth doesn't need foam to get clean.
π¦· What is the RDA abrasivity scale?
RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasivity) measures how hard a toothpaste scrubs your enamel. The ADA recommends staying under 250. Most daily toothpastes are 60β100. Whitening and charcoal formulas often push 150+. High abrasivity wears away enamel that cannot grow back.
π€° Why does it matter more when pregnant or TTC?
During pregnancy and when trying to conceive, exposure to endocrine disruptors matters even more. Ingredients like triclosan, parabens, and titanium dioxide have been linked to hormonal interference. Oral care is twice-daily exposure β it adds up over months.
π What should I look for instead?
Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) remineralizes enamel without fluoride controversy. Xylitol actively fights cavity-causing bacteria. Zinc citrate supports gum health. Aloe vera and potassium nitrate reduce sensitivity. These are the ingredients that earn a high Clean Scoreβ’.
